Eastern Shore Dock Bars: My Favorites from Cecil County to Talbot

Last Updated: October 10th, 2026

The Eastern Shore is a water world in every season, but especially in summer. Quiet coves fill with the bright buoys of crab pots and trotlines, mooring balls are spoken for, and families splash at the water's edge wherever the shoreline turns to beach. Nothing captures the Chesapeake summer quite like the dock bars opening back up for the season.

These waterfront spots are cruising destinations as much as restaurants, drawing people by boat and by car with live music, cold drinks and sunny decks. Every waterfront community here has one, but these are the ones I send friends to first, and most of them I've pulled up to by boat myself.

When is dock bar season on the Eastern Shore?

Most dock bars open in spring and stay busy through Labor Day, and a good number keep going into October. Many only open on weekends outside peak summer, and hours change from year to year, so check a venue's own page before you go.

Kent County dock bars

The Shanty Beach Bar at Tolchester Marina

On the Kent County shoreline, on the site of the old Tolchester Beach amusement park, The Shanty is a local favorite that still feels like a secret. The views of the Bay are wide open, there is a real sandy beach, and there is live music on weekends all summer. Boaters come across from Western Shore marinas along Middle River, and they share the beach with watermen, sailors and families from right here.

The Shanty is open Friday through Sunday in season, it welcomes all ages, and tables are first come, first served. The marina sits about 20 miles north of the Bay Bridge, which makes it an easy run by water.

More Kent County favorites

Waterman's Crab House, Rock Hall. I was born and raised in Rock Hall, so this one is home. Waterman's is where you go to sit down to a tray of steamed crabs on the water, and there is entertainment on the schedule most of the week, not just on weekends. If you're curious what it's like to live there, I wrote about living in Rock Hall.

Harbor Shack, Rock Hall. Laid back, great views and great tacos. This is my pick for lunch.

Talbot County dock bars

Foxy's, St. Michaels

We live off Greenwood Creek, so St. Michaels is our easiest cruise, and Foxy's is always our first or last stop while we're there. It's rarely planned. Usually we just head out with our creek neighbors and pick each other up on the way over.

Tucked deep inside St. Michaels harbor, looking across at the boat shop and the Hooper Strait Lighthouse at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Foxy's has an island feel and an orange crush people remember. It is named after Foxy's Tamarind Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, and it feels like a little of the Caribbean with a splash of Chesapeake. The menu leans toward seafood with Mexican, Caribbean and pub favorites (the fish tacos especially), and the bar fills with locals, visitors and boaters ordering Dark 'n' Stormys.

It's also the easiest dock bar on the Shore to get to by water. Between the marina, the public seawall and the museum's members-only marina, you have more docking options here than anywhere else on this list. (More on the museum below.)

More Talbot County favorites

Big Mack's Kitchen & Dock Bar, Tilghman Island. Come here for the barbecue. The pit beef sandwich and the Cuban are both outstanding.

Doc's Sunset Grille, Oxford. Doc's is a known name on the Shore, with sister restaurants in Easton and Centreville, and the Oxford location has a full menu and some of the best sunsets around. The docking is pretty exposed, so if you're coming by boat, pick a calm day.

Queen Anne's County dock bars

Fisherman's Crab Deck, Kent Narrows

Bars and restaurants sit shoulder to shoulder along the Kent Narrows waterfront, overlooking the bridge that carries beach traffic to Ocean City and back, and one spot stands out: Fisherman's Crab Deck. It's my go-to for crabs on the water in Queen Anne's County. People in the know skip the quieter Fisherman's Inn next door (open since 1930) for the big waterfront deck, where steamed blue crabs, live music and cold beer make it easy to while away a summer afternoon. It handles larger groups well, and there is plenty of covered seating if the weather turns. The slips fill up all summer under the Deck's giant neon crab sign, with classic rock and reggae drifting out over the Narrows.

More Queen Anne's County favorites

The Jetty, Kent Narrows. Saturday and Sunday breakfast here is great if you get there early. It's an easy lunch spot with a big menu, good crushes, and a good place to catch a band or watch a game.

Channel Side at Kentmorr Marina, Stevensville. The new restaurant at Kentmorr, on the Bay side of Kent Island, with a scratch-made Eastern Shore menu, transient slips for boaters, and sunsets straight across the Bay. They've also brought back breakfast with Holly's Cafe, a nod to the old Holly's Restaurant in Grasonville that so many of us grew up with.

Cecil County dock bars

Chesapeake Inn, Chesapeake City

Chesapeake City sits right on the C&D Canal, and the deck at the Chesapeake Inn is the place to watch it. Cargo ships, tugs and yachts pass close enough to feel part of the afternoon, and the marina next to the deck has slips for boaters stopping in for a bite. The deck and tiki bar have live music in season and a casual menu built around brick oven pizza, and the deck season runs later than most, into October. It's also a great spot for Sunday brunch, and that one you can enjoy all year.

Going by boat

I've been to Foxy's, Big Mack's, Doc's, The Jetty, the Crab Deck, Waterman's and Harbor Shack by water, and the Chesapeake Inn too, a while back. A few things I've learned along the way:

Call ahead on summer weekends. Slips go fast, so if you have to go on a busy Saturday, call in advance to ask about a slip.

Join the museum if St. Michaels is your regular run. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum runs a members-only marina right in the harbor, and membership at the right level gets you docking privileges. Details are on the CBMM docking page.

Watch the traffic. More boats on the weekend means you need to take more care docking. We try to sneak out late in the afternoon and come back at sunset, when it's calmer and the light is better anyway.

Make a morning of it. Sunday brunch at Carpenter Street Saloon in St. Michaels is one of our favorite runs. We pack a cooler and stop at the Village Shoppe on South Talbot Street to pick up dinner. Between Gourmet by the Bay's prepared meals and the butcher and deli counter, dinner is taken care of before we head home.

Locals have a real advantage when it comes to these spots, and a waterfront home turns a weekend outing into your neighborhood hangout. If that sounds like the life you want, my Eastern Shore waterfront home buyer's guide explains the difference between bayfront, riverfront and creekfront homes, and what each means for how you use the water.

When you are ready to look, I'd be happy to help you find the right place on the Shore.
