Fall on the Eastern Shore might just be my favorite time of year. The crowds thin out, the weather finally cools down, oysters are back, and there are so many good reasons to get out and enjoy where we live.
This is my personal list, some seasonal favorites, some local traditions, and a few things that are simply better this time of year. It stretches from Chesapeake City down to St. Michaels, so whether you live here, visit often, or are getting to know the Shore for the first time, there is something on it for you.
Mark your calendar: fall festivals and events
These are the dates I plan my fall around:
- October 4: Rockin' the Porch, Centreville (this was postponed until Spring, so be on the lookout for the updated event!)
- October 10: Fall Fest, Rock Hall
- October 17 and 18: Fall into St. Michaels
- October 30 to November 1: Downrigging Weekend, Chestertown
- November 1: Tank to Table, Chesapeake City
- November 7: Oysterfest, St. Michaels
- November 13 to 15: Waterfowl Festival, Easton
- November 26: YMCA Turkey Trot
Eat oysters
Cooler water means oyster season, and this is the time of year I start ordering them every chance I get!
- Blue Heron Oyster House & Inn, Rock Hall
- Harris Crab House, Kent Narrows
- Washington Street Pub, Easton
I like mine raw, with a glass of champagne. If I'm not in a champagne mood, a light IPA is a close second.
Go apple picking
Both of these are a bit of a drive for most of us, which is part of what makes them a fall tradition.
- Milburn Orchards, Elkton
- Blades Orchard, Federalsburg
My must-have is the apple cider donuts at Milburn. Orchard seasons depend on the weather, and a late frost can mean a small crop or none at all, so check each farm's website or social pages before you head out.
Grab a coffee and a treat
A fall morning with a warm drink is hard to beat, and these three are worth going out of your way for.
- Dessert First, Kent Narrows
- Ground Work Coffee, Kent Island
- Lovely Cove Coffee, Galena
Wherever I stop, my usual is an oat milk vanilla latte.
Visit a brewery or winery
The Shore's farms and vineyards are at their prettiest right now, and a tasting is an easy way to spend a slow afternoon.
- Bohemia Manor Winery, Chesapeake City
- Chesapeake Manor Vineyard, Kent Island
- Eden Town Brewing, Denton
- Crow Vineyard, Kennedyville
At Chesapeake Manor, I order the Chambourcin. The setting near the Bay on Kent Island is lovely any time, but especially in the fall. At Bohemia Manor, my pick is the Sparkling Rosé.
Take a scenic walk
Fall is the best season for our trails. The bugs are gone, the marsh grasses turn gold, and the migrating birds start coming through.
- Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area, Queen Anne's County
- Tuckahoe State Park, near Queenstown
- Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, near Rock Hall
Plan a cozy night out
When the evenings get cooler, these are my go-to spots for dinner, a drink, or a show.
- Vue Rooftop Lounge, Kent Island
- Watershed Alley, Chestertown
- Avalon Theatre, Easton
- Prime 225 Steakhouse, Chesapeake City
My perfect fall date night is dinner at Washington Street Pub in Easton, then a concert at the Avalon.
Book an overnight getaway
You do not have to go far for a weekend away. Each of these feels like a real escape and is close to home.
- Inn at Huntingfield Creek, Rock Hall
- Inn at Perry Cabin, St. Michaels
- Wilson's Cove, Kent Island
- Haven Harbour, Rock Hall
I can tell you the sunsets from Haven Harbour South and Wilson's Cove are worth every penny.
If you're visiting and picturing staying
Fall is when a lot of people visit the Shore for a weekend and leave wondering what it would be like to live here year-round. I understand that feeling, and this season is a great time to find out, because you see each town as it really is once summer is over.
If you are starting to compare towns, my guide to choosing an Eastern Shore town is a good next read. And if you would like to talk through what living here looks like, from waterfront homes to walkable small towns, I am always happy to help you explore Maryland's Eastern Shore.
What would you add to the list? I would love to hear your favorite fall traditions!
