Fishing, Surprises & Buying a Home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Good Things Come to Those Who Bait (and Buy Smart)

You know what they say about fishing? Good things come to those who bait. Corny, I know— but the truth is, fishing and real estate have a lot more in common than you might think!

For those who don’t know, I’ve been a big fan of recreational fishing ever since I met my husband, Steve. Growing up, most of the fishermen I knew were commercial, but Steve introduced me to the thrill of recreational fishing. And let me tell you — I was hooked.

Lessons from the Ocean

One Christmas, we went down to Costa Rica for sailfish season. The first day, we landed 23 sailfish in just eight hours (catch and release, of course). A couple of days later, our captain suggested we mix it up and try for tuna.

We could’ve said no. We came for sailfish, after all. But we trusted the expert.

That day ended up being the highlight of our trip. We filled the boat with tuna and ate like kings the rest of the week.

The moral? Sometimes the best experiences come from being open to the unexpected — and from trusting the advice of someone who knows the waters better than you do.

The Real Estate Parallel

That lesson carried over to one of my favorite client stories.

My friend and client, Blake, lived in a golf course community and loved the lifestyle. But then his life changed — he got engaged, took in six kids, three dogs, and even a horse. Suddenly, his old neighborhood wasn’t the right fit.

He and his fiancé wanted a farm with at least four acres. Their online searches kept coming up short. Why? Because the perfect home was listed at 3.98 acres — which meant their search filters never showed it.

That’s where working with a local agent made all the difference. I found the property, they fell in love, and now they’re living their dream life on a beautiful piece of land in the right school district, close to commuter roads, with plenty of space for their new family.

Just like our fishing trip — they came looking for one thing and found joy in something unexpected.

Why Having a Local Expert Matters

Online search tools like Zillow and Redfin can only do so much. They don’t know how to think outside the box. They don’t know the backroads, the neighborhoods, or the little quirks of listings.

A local agent does.

Whether you’re:

  • Moving to the Eastern Shore for more space and slower living
  • Looking for a waterfront escape near Annapolis, DC, or Baltimore
  • Or simply unsure what you’re looking for yet…

…having an experienced guide by your side can mean the difference between frustration and finding your dream home.
